Sharon - I just wanted to let you know how the breeding/heat detection was going on our mare .. it went so super!!!! i thought she would come in heat on saturday, 3 wks from last time...) and yesterday she showing to the gelding she is with (saw her doing this mildly 3wks ago) even squatting a bit. So i wrap her tail and we proceed to tease her with the stud.... and her being a maiden mare, i thought we were in for a ride... but oh no, prove me wrong, she took one look at this squealing stud, stopped, peed then swung around - *in love*!!! So off we go to the breeding pen - proceeding with caution....in the mean time, she is twirling around panicking, peeing, being retarded trying to find the stallion. We bring in the stud squealin' and a prancin'... and breeds her.... WOW, did she stand well... solid, peeing, lifting her tail, she did NOT move a bit! ... I have NEVER seen a maiden mare (and few older mares) that have stood this well. AND, I've never seen HER in such strong heat!

Oh! and this morning! yikes. i thot the love fest would diminish a bit... oh no. silly mare comes out of the barn and stops for a mini-come-and-love-me-pee so i hustle her to the turnout pen (which is SE of the studs pen...) but oh no, i can't LEAVE her out for the day even though i thought she would ignore him & eat (she is usually a hay hog) but this AM there is a SE wind, she is in love and stays at the gate and postures and pees and stares at him and the stud is going NUTS.... so in the barn she goes... and she is absolutely vibrating when she gets in there! Tonite we breed again. Sharon, I am so impressed at how strong her heat is and well behaved she is being at breeding!

(My subsequent email to her was about another client whose broodmare started to walk around backwards during her heat it was so strong.)
She writes "Yes, my mare too, was walking backwards for 4 days. Actually she stood to be bred for 5 days - likely would have stood a 6th, but the stallion was not so interested. I figured it was just recreational at that point! I am trying to get the vet out to ultrasound this week so i know whether i need the stallion back or not. Remember the grey mare of mine you treated? Well she is doing well - and absolutely gorgeous. she looks super. She came around very nicely. she'll foal in mid April or so. " (this is a mare that they were told had a hard small uterus with poor cycle and limited ovulation and were unable to get in foal)

" I meet with the ultrasounding vet tomorrow - YAY! I'll let you know then... Also, he will be castrating 3 colts for me. 2 are getting readied for showing - my question to you is, in your opinion, would MSM help? (i know I gave it last year and it *seemed* to help, but I can't remember how much and for how long!) How much and how long would you recommend? " (my comment was add devils claw plus and echinacea plus in addition to the msm)

" OH! the mare is pregnant - looks all very good - YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Herbalist's Note: Congratulations! This mare is currently being supplemented with wild yam root which was started the day after final breeding and will be continued until the sixth month to keep her hormonal levels up to maintain pregnancy and prevent reabsorption. Remember wild yam root is considered the anti-miscarriage herb! For humans and animals.
